A Convenient Lift in a Data Driven World: Exploring Analytics

Let’s take a hypothetical scenario…. You are visiting an unfamiliar city for the first time and want to go out for a decent meal. No one would expect you to read the past five years’ worth of restaurant reviews and go look at all the options to gauge the ambiance.  Instead, you would go to a concierge or use a service like Yelp to get recommendations that are already aggregated. Similarly, when you travel to your meal you aren’t going to buy a car just to make that one trip; you are going to walk, take a shuttle, hail a taxi, or request an Uber.  And finally, once you get to the restaurant, you probably aren’t going to order the most expensive, extravagant item on the menu; rather you will look for an option that is a reasonable combination of price and flavor.

There may be some of you who relish the challenge of exploring a new city; who may plan to move there and might invest in a car; or who have a sufficiently refined palate such that only the most grandiose meal will satisfy…but that number is a tiny, tiny fraction.  For most, a general recommendation, a quick taxi ride, and a good burger would be your first choice.  So why, when it comes time to be “data-driven,” do we so often think the best path forward is one of great effort and extravagance? 

Often, especially for organizations early in their analytic maturity, it doesn’t take much to find some value.  You don’t need to learn all about analytics on your own; there are many places to get good input to start the process.  You don’t need to buy all the systems if you only need analytics on occasion or you are still testing the waters. Rent some server time or even just plug away for a bit in Excel.  You would be surprised how far basic descriptive statistics can take you before you need to tackle complex neural networks and multi-variate, non-linear optimization.

But, the best part of all isn’t that you don’t need a huge investment to get value.  No, the best part is that you have a friend who lives in that city, has a car, and can give you a couple of great recommendations for restaurants and what to order.  In fact, they know you, they know what you like, what you want to do, and can give you even better recommendations than the concierge ever could.
